Treatment for Opioid Addiction

Addiction to opioids is a relentless disease that impacts every aspect of life.  Active addiction to opioids makes it nearly impossible to maintain a “normal” life as a result of the way opioids change how our brain responds to signals it receives.  And as the opioid epidemic continues to surge on, opioid addiction can leave you feeling hopeless and helpless, however, there is hope for your future and you are capable and deserving of living a life you love.  Treatment for opioid addiction combines a wealth of therapies and individual counseling to help you address the root causes of your addiction and learn to live a life free from opioids.

Opioid Rehab-What to Expect

While each rehab will vary slightly, here is what you can expect during your time in treatment.

  • Admission: During this time you will complete a full psychological assessment which will include medication history, questions about your addiction, a nutritional analysis, and a blood draw.  From there, you will work with your treatment specialist to develop a treatment plan that is unique to you and your circumstances.  This will guide your treatment in rehab.
  • Detox: The medically assisted detox process is the safest way to ensure your success in detox.  Since opioid withdrawal symptoms can be quite unpleasant, doing it in a facility allows you to be monitored and receive medications that can promote comfort.
  • Rehabilitation: This is the bread and butter of addiction treatment.  It is during this time you will receive a wealth of valuable and life-saving information through counseling, group therapies, and traditional 12-step programs.  You will have the opportunity to connect and find support from your peers in the program and will begin to adjust to life without opioids.  Rehab can be in the form of residential, inpatient, or outpatient depending on your needs.
  • Aftercare: Before you leave rehab, your treatment team will get you connected with resources, therapists, and doctors in your area to continue your treatment when you return home.  Having aftercare set up before you go home decreases the risk of relapse and provides vital support during early recovery.

Types of Opioid Rehab Treatments

Deciding which type of opioid rehab treatment is best for you will depend on the severity of your addiction.  Treatment programs may include medically assisted detox, residential, inpatient, and outpatient.  Each program will consist of trauma therapies, group therapies, individual counseling, life coaching, and much more.

  • Residential treatment programs are tailored for people who are struggling with severe opioid addiction and are usually the first step after detox.  In residential you will live at the center for roughly 30-90 days while you receive treatment.  You will enjoy around-the-clock nursing care, medication management, a variety of therapies, nutritious meals, 12-step programs, alternative therapies such as trauma therapies and meditation, and so much more.  This is particularly helpful if you have trouble controlling urges to use at home and provides accountability in a compassionate and understanding manner.
  • Inpatient programs are very similar to residential programs but require a shorter length of stay, typically ranging from one week to one month.  While there you will have access to all the amenities as a residential program without committing to so much time away.
  • Outpatient program continues the same therapies and perks of inpatient but allows you to return home each day after you receive treatment.

Co-Occurring Disorders and Opioid Addiction

The term co-occurring disorders refer to having both an addiction as well as a mental health condition.  It is incredibly common for those who suffer from an addiction to have at least one mental health condition because they are risk factors for one another.  While in rehab, it is imperative to treat both so you have the most success in recovery.  Treatment for co-occurring disorders includes diagnosis, trauma therapies, medication management, and the more traditional therapies associated with rehab.
