Trauma and Addiction

In our years of experience and that of our employees, we have learned that trauma is often a primary underlying cause for addiction. Trauma can be rooted in any or a combination of the following:

  • sexual abuse as a child
  • physical abuse as a child
  • parents who are substance abusers
  • abandonment
  • loss of a parent

Identifying the source of trauma itself, can be traumatic; but once identified, the healing process can begin.

At ABHCA, we employ several types of therapy including traditional individual, group, and family sessions. We strongly believe that addiction is a family disease and encourage family participation. In addition to the traditional methods, we also incorporate newer methods that are considered to be extremely effective. Some of these include:

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a form of psychotherapy in which the person being treated is asked to recall distressing images; the therapist then directs the patient in one type of bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements or hand tapping.

Rapid Resolution Therapy (RRT)

RRT is a form of therapy that aims to help individuals permanently overcome the ongoing effects that stem from traumatic experiences by combining hypnosis, guided imagery, stories and purposeful communication that elicits a response from the subconscious part of the mind to eliminate the challenging effects of trauma.

Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR)

TIR is a one-on-one therapeutic technique performed by a trained therapist in a highly structured but non-judgmental or confrontational manner. Weekly sessions are 60-90 minutes and results can be achieved in as few as one session.
