What is Opioid Addiction Treatment?

Opioid addiction is a disease in which prescription opioids have a physical, emotional, and mental hold on someone.  Opioid addiction can affect anyone, regardless of age, socioeconomic status, or career, and it has reached epidemic levels in recent years.  Treatment for opioid addiction consists of a holistic approach, treating both the physical and emotional aspects of the disease.  Depending on the severity of the addiction, sometimes a medical detox program is the first step in the treatment process. However, for others, rehab starts in an inpatient setting, where patients receive around-the-clock care as well as a variety of therapies to address the root causes of addiction, trauma, and co-occurring mental health conditions.  After completing an inpatient program, treatment continues in an outpatient program where you will continue to build on what you learned in inpatient.

Choosing the Right Rehab Program

Choosing the right rehab program for you is vital to your success in recovery.  Knowing what your needs are and what goals you have for your time in treatment will help you pick the program that best fits your needs.  When looking for rehab programs, here are some things to consider:

  • Are you willing to travel to attend rehab?
  • What will your financial obligations be? Does your insurance cover any or all of the cost of treatment?
  • Read reviews from the rehab you are interested in, and if possible, tour the facility.
  • What level of care will be most beneficial for you?  If you have been inactive addiction for a while, you will likely benefit more from an inpatient setting, which requires you to stay at the treatment center while receiving treatment.  Inpatient programs can last anywhere from 30-90 days depending on your needs.  For those with a more “mild” addiction, outpatient programs may be the best fit.  Outpatient programs allow for the resumption of a more normal schedule because you will attend treatment during the day and return home each night.

Opioid Detox Process

Detox is an important step in the rehab process because it sets you up to have a clear head to continue onto rehab.  When actively withdrawing from opioids, you can experience severe and very painful withdrawal symptoms which can make focusing on anything treatment-related seem impossible.  Detoxing in a medical setting allows you to be monitored by nurses and doctors who can administer medications to promote comfort, and intervene if necessary.
