Al-Anon is a support group for people who have a loved one struggling with alcohol addiction. Al-Anon members understand the complexity of alcoholism and see it as a family disease due to the way it impacts everyone involved. Similar to AA or NA, Al-Anon has local meetings nationwide for family and friends to find support, encouragement, and resources to help them while they work through the complexities of familial disease. Their philosophy is taking it “one day at a time” and the meetings aim to help you find peace during this difficult time.
Who Can Benefit from Al-Anon?
Al-Anon was developed to provide spouses, children, parents, siblings, grandchildren, and friends of alcoholics to have a safe place to share their struggles and concerns and learn new ways to help their loved ones. They have a quiz to help you determine if you would benefit from attending their meetings and you can find it here. Research has also shown that addicts who have family members that receive support from Al-Anon are more likely to be successful in treatment should they receive it.
What to Expect at Your First Al-Anon Meeting?
First and foremost, you should understand that a key principle of Al-Anon is anonymity, meaning that what you choose to share and who you see will be kept private. This is a safe place for you to seek the support and understanding you need while you navigate helping your loved one. There is no pressure to share your story if you do not wish to, but when you’re ready you will have a room full of people there to listen. Al-Anon is free, convenient, and can make a huge impact on improving your mental health surrounding this complex disease and the impact it’s had on you and your family.
