What is Alcohol Detox Like?

The process of detoxing from alcohol is something that can be incredibly uncomfortable regardless of the severity of your addiction. When you develop an addiction to alcohol, your body will begin to crave this substance at a certain point. If you have a severe addiction, it’s possible that you may begin to crave alcohol within just hours from the time that you initially consumed it.

Initially, alcohol detox is something that can be misleading because your withdrawal symptoms can start off on the mild side. You may feel slightly nauseous or have a headache, however, it’s nothing that you think you can’t manage. However, the further along you get in the withdrawal process, you will begin to notice that your withdrawal symptoms will make it impossible for you to take care of yourself.

Alcohol detox will provide you with the type of environment that you need to navigate the withdrawal symptoms that you may feel. You will have the peace of mind of knowing that during this incredibly vulnerable time in your life, you will have the around-the-clock care that you need to ensure that you never fall into a precarious and potentially fatal position.

How Long Does Alcohol Detox Last?

Your alcohol detox program will last approximately seven days with the worst of your withdrawal symptoms developing between the first and the third day. This is the stretch of time where you will most likely be unable to properly care for yourself and this is the main reason why you should never attempt to go through the detox process on your own. Between the fifth and the seventh day of detox, you will begin to feel more like yourself and you can then begin to focus on taking the next steps in your recovery journey.

What to Expect During Alcohol Detox?

When you commit to an alcohol detox program, you can expect to receive the round-the-clock care that you need during these first few days of your sobriety. Withdrawal and detox is unpredictable which is part of what can make it incredibly dangerous. It’s possible that you could experience any one of if not all of the following symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Seizures
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Cravings
  • Increased anxiety
  • Depression

Ultimately, it’s possible that any one of these symptoms or the combination of them could result in serious physical or psychological issues if not death.

What Happens After Alcohol Detox?

Once you complete alcohol detox, you will be in a much better place both physically and psychologically to face your addiction. At that point, you will have the opportunity to take advantage of our personalized treatment options such as:

Partial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program is a structured treatment plan that gives clients the opportunity to live in one of our beautiful single-family residences located within close proximity to the incredible Fort Lauderdale beach. Not only will you be able to rest and recover in luxury, but you will also have around-the-clock access to your treatment team which can serve as a welcome relief to many people that may find themselves suffering from the initial days and weeks of sobriety. With our PHP rehab in Austin, you will take part in a minimum of 25 hours of therapeutic treatment per week, however, you will still have the flexibility to go to the beach or attend a local 12 step meeting during your time in treatment.

Intensive Outpatient Program

An intensive outpatient program is used as a step down from a partial hospitalization program for many people because it can allow them to adjust to a somewhat normal flow of life. In comparison to the structure of a partial hospitalization program, an intensive outpatient program is flexible and requires a minimum of nine hours per week in therapy. This is part of what makes this program an ideal option if you are working or going to school part-time.

General Outpatient Program

A general outpatient program is an excellent choice for a client that may have full-time work or school responsibilities. This type of program is structured in such a way so that you only have to complete a minimum of four hours of therapy each week. Three of those hours will include group therapy while the remaining hour will be dedicated to individual therapy. We will also strongly encourage you to participate in 12 step meetings throughout the area so that you can remain focused on your overall goal of sobriety. These meetings are also an excellent way for you to meet people in your area that you can count on to be your support system and vice versa.

At The Source Treatment Center, we focus on providing Austin residents with access to the detox and general recovery care that they need. Our team works quickly to set you up with an initial treatment plan. In fact, in most cases, we can provide clients with the opportunity to take advantage of treatment within 24 hours from the time that you reach out to us. A member of our intake team is available right now to speak with you about your recovery option. Don’t wait another day. Give us a call at (800) 204-0418.
